Prof. Peter Atkinson is currently Head of the School of Geography at the University of Southampton. The main academic contribution of Prof. Atkinson's research has been in understanding spatial scale and scaling relations primarily within a remote sensing context. Prof. Atkinson has developed a range of spatial statistical models and spatially distributed dynamic models for application to a range of fields including remote sensing, landscape epidemiology and hydrological processes. Prof. Peter M. Atkinson has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals the majority of them in ISI-listed journals. In addition, he has published over 40 refereed book chapters, has edited eight journal special issues, eight books, one conference proceedings and, by invitation, a large Theme on Geoinformatics for the UNESCO Encyclopaedia of Life Support Systems. He has also, by invitation, written the Progress in GIS Reports for Progress in Physical Geography (1997-2001). He was co-editor of the International Journal of Remote Sensing Letters for nine years from 2001-2009, and is currently Associate Editor of Mathematical Geosciences and the Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation. He also sits on the editorial board of Geographical Analysis and Environmental Informatics. Prof. Atkinson has held several large grants, and numerous small grants and PhD bursaries. He has supervised over 30 PhD students, 20 of whom have now graduated. He is co-Director of the Centre for Geographical Health Research (CGHR) at the University of Southampton.
